I love my school. Actually it is a lyceum near Versaillas in France where pupils study foreign langueges from nursery school right through to the final school – leaving exams. Our pupils ge regular edcation and attend their national sections for six or eight hours a week, when they taught by native speakers the language, literature and history of the country concerned. The school is for the bright. Standards are high and the workload is heavy. Some pupils become fluent in three or four languages and many go to universities abroad.

Photographing animals

Photographer James Warwick visits Kenya and Namibia and has just returned from India. James didn't find photography interesting but on holiday in Africa during university, he decided on his future job.

James has to get up early for most of his African pictures. He takes a few when the sun is going down, but in the afternoon the light is too strong. Being a photographer is a hard work. Some photographers visit different places on one trip, but James prefers to stay in one place and learn all about it.

He has some wonderful pictures of Indian tigers. Once, two tigers ran past him, stopped a meter away from his truck and began to fight. He was too afraid to photograph them. In Namibia one lion came even closer. It went all way around James's truck checking for danger. Then it got up on the back andlooked at him through the window. This was one of James's happiest moments.

James doesn't use his flat in Britain much. He doesn't mind living out of a suitcase, but he sometimes finds life hard without his friends. Money isn't very important for him, but he likes travelling. His pictures make people think about animals in danger, from African elephants to Britain birds. This is what matters most to him.

Like any other country Britain has its manners and customs as well as reputation.

Foreigners often say that in English trains people never speak to each other. But it

of course is not true.

Not long ago I was travelling to London. In my compartment there were many pas-

sengers and they talked to each other most all the time. They told each other where

they lived, where they were going and, of course, were talking about the weather. As

soon as the train started, a little girl sitting by the window, called out: «We're off!»

I found out that she was going to her aunt's in Cheswick. «It's somewhere near the

Thames, but I don't know exactly where», the girl said. «Shall we be passing anywhere

near it?» «Cheswick? It's easy to find. You can get to it on the Tube. I'll show you

where to go when we arrive», I told her. «Goodness! How fast the train is going!» said

an old lady. «Do they go so fast in snowy weather and at night?» Her neighbour smiled,

took out a book and began to read. Here was a typical Englishman: during the whole

journey he didn't say a single word. But as we arrived in London, he got up and turn-

ing to the lady said with the strong accent: «Excuse me, I do not understand English.

I'm from Poland».

Visit the Edinburgh Festival

Every year thousands of people come to Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, to be the part of the Edinburgh festival. For three weeks every August and September the city is filled with actors and artists from all over the world. They come to Edinburgh for the biggest art festival in Britain. During this time the streets of the city are alive with music and dance from early in the morning until late at night. You can see even artists painting pictures on the streets!

Tens of thousands of tourists come to the festival to see new films and plays and to hear music played by famous musicians. This year you can see over five hundred performances with actors from more than forty countries.

The tickets for these performances are quite cheap and it is usually easier to see your favourite star in Edinburgh than it is in London. So come to Edinburgh next summer!
